Features Not Currently Supported

Current versions of Win4Lin do not support the DirectX multimedia Application Programming Interface (API), including the DirectDraw component of DirectX. Most games programmed for Windows use this API and thus are not supported under Win4Lin. Additionally, DOS VGA (video graphics array) applications do not work with Win4Lin in DOS emulation mode. Currently only the sound features of RealPlayer 8 are supported by Win4Lin, as this version uses DirectX for video display. You should download an earlier version of RealPlayer if you wish to use its video features with Win4Lin.

Win4Lin provides support for PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) sound output only. PCM allows Windows .wav files as well as many multimedia players to play sound. Windows sound input, Midi, Mixer, and CD players are not currently supported.

Win4Lin supports only US, Western European, and some Eastern European versions of Windows 95, Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, and Windows 98 SE. Media must be installable on any computer and not tied to a machine-specific BIOS. Windows NT, and Windows 2000 are not supported at this time. Support for Windows ME is scheduled for mid-2002. Keyboard, mouse, sound, disk, and display devices are supported in Win4Lin via the existing Linux drivers. Serial (COM) port and parallel port devices can be accessed via Win4Lin virtual device drivers. USB support is limited to keyboard, mouse, display, sound, printer, floppy, CD-ROM, and hard disks via the Linux driver for these devices. Win4Lin does not provide support for the NetBEUI or IPX networking protocols.

Win4Lin does not currently support using NFS, or other remote file systems, as the C:\ drive in Windows.

NeTraverse Server Standard Edition

NeTraverse brings the best of the Linux® computing platform and the Windows desktop environment to users in a networked environment through NeTraverse Server Standard Edition (NSSE). Leveraging one of the most stable, scalable server platforms to deliver Windows application services over a network, NSSE is ideally suited for the professional office, small business, university, government agency, department or branch office looking for innovative ways to reduce the cost of ownership and extend the life of their current technology investments.

With NeTraverse Server, users access their Server desktop session through a standard Linux X Window System, or through the NeTraverse Universal Client, which permits access to Windows® sessions on Windows-based computers, or most OS clients over the WAN or Internet. The NeTraverse server can serve a virtual Windows session to a universal client running Java (a Java-enabled web browser) via a web page. This simple option allows a myriad of operating systems to access these applications through the Java-enabled browsers they are already familiar with. In today's conventional computing model, applications live on the desktop. By moving the application from the desktop to the network, developers can now make an application as easily accessible as a web page. With NeTraverse, IT departments can finally take advantage of a multi-vendor, multi-platform network, without forcing their users to leave the familiar Windows desktop environment.

By utilizing the robust services of Linux®, Windows performs remarkably well, with increased stability and security. Executing Windows in the application space of Linux helps protect the system from Windows application failures. Layering Windows over the Linux file and networking systems enhances performance, strength, and security. By deploying NeTraverse Server Standard Edition, organizations can use their existing Window licenses and hardware, reducing costs and increasing productivity by migrating to a more reliable, cost-effective and high-performance Linux computing platform that gives users the power to access their data anytime, anywhere.

NeTraverse Server Standard Edition not only provides the invaluable freedom and flexibility to break away from traditional Windows IT solutions, it ensures the significant cost savings necessary to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership of desktop management for good.
