As Products Editor and Newsletter Editor here at Linux Journal, I come across many computer books. Despite our era of 'get it on the 'Net' and perverse industry consolidation, I am continually astounded by the variety and quality of books, on both real and virtual paper, to which we now have access.
In this article I've selected what I consider to be some of the past year's outstanding achievements in the world of Linux music and sound software. It's not really a "Best Of 2007", it's just my personal choices for what I found most interesting and significant in the past year.
One of the things we plan to do
different in the Geek Ranch (see What's New
Down Here?) is build a lot of domes instead of conventional
buildings. The reasoning behind this is that they are quicker to
build, cost less and use mostly local materials and that which is
not local (in particular, steel) is used in lower quantities than
LJ Gadget Guy Shawn Powers managed to keep us busy one-upping each other in the office today -- he wanted to know who got the geekiest gift this holiday season. Of course he proved to be the geekiest of all when he went as far as producing a full video review of his gift:
In my last article I introduced the idea of the Geek Ranch. The facility will be more than just a place for geeks to write code. We are going to need a web site to promote the facility to the various audiences. All the pieces of that web site are not yet determined but we do have an initial features list.

SoX is a power-packed command-line tool for various types of audio
processing.
It's very useful as an audio format converter, and it can be used for
resampling audio files, converting between endianness, audio
encoding and modifying other attributes of common audio file formats.
