software with ustream/linux technology

On October 1st, 2008 william bryant (not verified) says:

What software and hardware are you using with this stream?

I do a lot of ustream, but haven't been able to get it successfully going with Linux yet! What software are you using, what cameras, and are you on linux?

I'm using a Logitech Quickcam deluxe, which I can get going with Cheese and Skype, but i'm still having a lot of video editing/capture problems on Linux.

Flash

All of the video on this site requires the proprietary Adobe Flash player.

How crap is that for a so-called "Linux" magazine?

RE so-called "Linux" magazine

On October 1st, 2008 william bryant (not verified) says:

I'm on Linux right now viewing this site with no problems.

Unfortunately, Flash is so widespread and so good, it's hard to get around using while maintaining a good balance.

Several Issues At Play

On September 30th, 2008 Shawn Powers says:

Anonymous,

There are really 2 separate issues going on with these videos.

1) Streaming live video isn't something we have the ability to do internally. Perhaps someday we will be able to accomplish it, but right now, sites like ustream, stickam, etc. have a dedicated staff and still struggle with quality, reliability, and scalability. My suspicion is that they use flash because it works really good for streaming video on the web. I don't know of an open format way to do it. If there is a way, please let us know!

2) Our ultimate goal is to get Linux into the hearts, hands, and minds of the most people possible. Yes, as a staff we need to make a living, but really, a person doesn't join the staff of a Linux publishing company if they aren't passionate about open source. I want to reach EVERYONE. I want EVERYONE to hear about Linux. I want those people that would have no reason to come to linuxjournal.com to be drawn here by our videos. I want angry Digg users that are fed up with Windows to follow a link here and learn about open source. I want high school and college students that are using Windows 98 to stumble across our Facebook page, and maybe find a way to get more use out of their aging home computer with Linux. I want the message of FOSS and Linux to get in the proprietary corners of the world -- and if I get a little dirty in the process, well, I'm willing to do so.

I want people to choose to love Linux. In order for that to happen, they'll first have to learn about it. That's something I'm passionate about, and something I go to great lengths to accomplish.

Oh, but before I close -- I'll make sure to include an OGG/Theora version of our videos from now on. Someday, hopefully that format will be all I need to post. :)

I am ignorant to this program and hoping that someone can help me figure it out before I fail my mathematical computer science course. HELP

From the Magazine

August 2009, #184

If you're a culinary type you've probably heard of Pickled Capers. This month, we present you with an even tastier treat: Kerneled Kapers. That's right Linux so good that you can eat it for dinner. We've got two articles about kernel scheduling: one about real time scheduling and the other about the Completely Fair Scheduler which appeared in Linux 2.6.23. We also have an article on the new Ksplice technology that appeared on the scene just recently. Also in this issue: find out how to make root unprivileged.

And if Kapers aren't your cup of tea we have our usual buffet of articles: eyeOS which allows you to create your own cloud based desktops, using fixtures and factories with Rails, more on secure Squids, a review of the long awaited KOffice 2.0, Longomatch, and Kanatest.

But don't leave before we serve up the "piece de resistance": Point/Counterpoint on Twitter.

Apologies to Chef Marcel for borrowing his shtick.
