You Need A Budget

This time of year is often rough on finances, and although there are many money-management tools available for Linux, none are quite like You Need A Budget, or YNAB for short. Unlike traditional budgeting programs, YNAB focuses on a few simple rules to help you get out of debt and, more important, to see where your money is going. If you've ever struggled with sticking to a budget (I certainly have), give YNAB a try. I'm not a "numbers person", yet YNAB seems to make sense.

YNAB is an Adobe Air-based application, so it runs on Windows, Macintosh and Linux. It's not free, but there's a seven-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. There's even an app in the Android Marketplace that will sync with your desktop application for entering purchases on the go. If you've created a budget, you know exactly how much money you have coming in, and how much is going out. You can make some plans concerning that big expense. But if you don't have a budget plan, you probably don't have a very good picture of your finances, and you may be tempted to borrow more money rather than squeezing all you can from your income. It's definitely better in the long run -- for you and for your money -- to have a budget.

If you faced financial problems, try online loans offered with no faxing.

Computer history is strewn with examples of companies that made business decisions that seemed reasonable at the time but later turned out to have been unwise, to say the least. I sincerely hope this Adobe decision i.e. discontinuing of Adobe Air for Linux support joins such examples. Incidentally, isn't Android at heart Linux?

When I went to their website, I could only find .exe for windows and .dmg for Mac. Do they still provide an Adobe Air installer packages?

Search for:
AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
and you will find links to Adobes older pages for the Linux version. Note that there are both 32 an 64 bit available.

I use YNAB because of the philosophy that is built in to their system, which didn't seem easy for me to use in any other system. I did try YNAB in the newest version of AIR under WINE in Ubuntu. It worked great. As far as I could tell, all the functionality was intact - even mobile sync. I love the program so much that, even if it ceases to work under WINE, I will use it in my Windows 7 virtual box, which I maintain for one other vital program.

This is a great program. We use it on Ubuntu faithfully. However, Linux users should be aware that the newest versions of Adobe Air will not support Linux. Thus, future versions of YNAB, which will run on newer Airs, will not run natively on Linux either. However, there may be a possibility that the newest Airs will run under WINE, as they seem to do well.

As far as I know, Adobe Air for Linux is not supported anymore. I'm using the last version available. So you better not get hooked on an application you might not be able to keep running.
