Linux Product Insider: Online Dictionary of Engineering Science & Tech
The July 11th "Linux Product Insider" features the Online Dictionary of Engineering Science & Tech, Curl Data Kit, High Performance MySQL, Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day and Sans Digital AccuNAS AN2L.
Here is this week's Linux product news:
ASTM International’s Online Dictionary of Engineering Science and Technology
The new ASTM International’s Online Dictionary of Engineering Science and Technology is no doorstop. It is an online, susbscription-based dictionary with 76,000 terms contained in more than 12,000 ASTM standards. ASTM is is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. The definition of each term was written by technical experts in their field and reflects the sense in which that field uses the term. The dictionary also contains hot links from each standard designation to the full scope of the standard, as well as from from the ASTM committees to specific information on that committee. The search tools allow for search by main committee, phrase, keyword, designation number or alphabetically.
Curl Data Kit
The team over at Curl Inc. recently released its new Curl Data Kit (CDK), the second product to be delivered from the company's Open Source initiative. The CDK library complements Version 6.0 of the Curl Rich Internet Application (RIA) Platform and facilitates the building data-centric applications in Curl and provides support for local SQL databases. By allowing the storage and retrieval of data using the popular SQLite engine, the CDK library is an important foundation for occasionally connected computing (OCC) applications developed with Curl. Curl Inc.'s chief strategy officer Jnan Dash commented: "By adding the CDK library, we are allowing the Curl developer community to take advantage of the full power of SQLite, the most widely deployed SQL database engine in the world."
High Performance MySQL, Second Edition (O'Reilly)
A six-author team (Baron Schwartz et al.) is the brains behind the 2nd edition of High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, Replication, and More, which the authors call "the mythical perfect MySQL book none of them had read but kept looking for." A complete re-write from the first edition, the book is focused not just on the needs of the MySQL application developer but also on the rigorous demands of the MySQL administrator, who needs to keep the system up and running no matter what the programmers or users may throw at the server. It also helps readers improve their skills and build fast reliable systems with MySQL, answering questions like "How can I set up a cluster of MySQL servers capable of handling millions upon millions of queries and ensure that things keep running even if a couple of the servers die?" Finally, the book helps dispel the mindset that it's OK to just throw hardware, power and cooling at computing problems, and get back to more of the punch-card mindset where everyone was concerned about doing things efficiently.
Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day, 6th Edition(Sams)
The team of Jesse Liberty, Siddhartha Rao and Bradley L. Jones teamed up to pen the new 6th Edition of Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day by Sams.
