Microsoft.com Running on Linux

January 26th, 2001 by Don Marti in

Wired News reported today that Microsoft has outsourced their DNS to Akamai, and microsoft.com is now being served by name servers with a "networking implementation very similar to that of Linux". Akamai Technologies is a well-known Linux shop, but let's see.

Let's see which name servers Microsoft is using right now:

microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  DNS4.CP.MSFT.NET.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  DNS5.CP.MSFT.NET.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  DNS7.CP.MSFT.NET.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  DNS6.CP.MSFT.NET.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  z1.msft.akadns.COM.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  z2.msft.akadns.COM.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  z6.msft.akadns.COM.
microsoft.com.          1d20h7m8s IN NS  z7.msft.akadns.COM.

Let's do a queso on the last four.

$ sudo queso z1.msft.akadns.COM:53
216.32.118.104:53       * Linux 2.1.xx/2.2.xx
$ sudo queso z2.msft.akadns.COM:53
32.96.80.17:53  * Linux 2.1.xx/2.2.xx
$ sudo queso z6.msft.akadns.COM:53
207.229.152.20:53       * Linux 2.1.xx/2.2.xx
$ sudo queso z7.msft.akadns.COM:53
213.161.66.158:53       * Linux 2.1.xx/2.2.xx

It's Linux, all right.

It is very ironic that they use linux. Although I am sure some linux developers use Windows to do coding.

I would go with FreeBSD for DNS servers, they are the most stable.

It's now August 2003 and they're still using Akamai Linux to "enhance the multi-media experience for users visiting microsoft.com websites". How ironic.

Well, one would asume that it was posted for the fact that it is quite ironic that Microsoft, the creators of the WINDOWS operating system, would be using LINUX, which is one of their major competitors, to host their website.

Actually, they may be running linux for DNS servers, but the web site is still running "Microsoft-IIS/6.0". If you dont beleive me, then take a look at the response for www.microsoft.com. And to make things a little more clear, microsoft.com also reports "Microsoft-IIS/6.0".

I am glad that Linux is/was running the DNS servers. But the web traffic is generated by IIS 6.0. And I am pretty sure that Linux doesnt run Microsoft's Web server.

News Flash: Linux Kernel 3.0 to include an on-the-go Expresso machine interface! Ok, maybe not, but Linux is definitely going mobile, from phones to e-readers. Find out more inside about Android, the Kindle 2, the Western Digital MyBook II, The Bug, and Indamixx (a portable recording studio). And if you've gone mobile and you been wanting more Emacs in your life then check out Conkeror.

To compliment the mobile we've got the stationary: parsing command line options with getopt, checking your Ruby code with metric_fu, and building a secure Squid proxy. How is this stationary you ask? What can we say? It's not. We just wanted to see if anybody actually read this part of the page :) .

All this and more, and all you have to do is get your hot sweaty hands on the latest copy of Linux Journal.
