Scribus has mixed reputation among free software users. On the one hand, users are vaguely aware of Scribus as a first-rate application that can hold its own against proprietary counterparts like InDesign.
There are some superb desktop Linux distributions that are designed to work with very old hardware. For example, Puppy Linux is a great choice to quickly turn an old PC into a secure, easy to use word processing, email and light web browsing workstation.
One of my favorite new apps is a little system tray app called
caffeine
(and here).
It's simple, yet very practical, its purpose is to inhibit a screen saver
or sleep mode, which is great while watching flash videos on sites like hulu.
There are a number of ways to extract a range of pages from a PDF file:
there are PDF related toolkits for doing it, or you can use Ghostscript directly.
If you need to move your Linux installation to a different hard drive or
partition (and keep it working) and your distro uses grub this
