Ever wondered where the name Motif came from? A contest was held inside the Open Software Foundation to name the application they had been calling the UEC (User Environment Component). Many names were suggested. Motif was entered by one of the employees (Ken Flowers), because in the art world, a motif is a recurring artistic symbol or theme—this meaning obviously carries over to the GUI world.
