It's Official: Firefox is Huge

Everyone already knows that the Firefox World Record attempt went over like Fourth of July fireworks — so much so that they blew the boxen away — but the big finish has finally arrived: Guinness has certified Download Day 2008 as a world record.

With a final total of 8,002,530 downloads between 6:16 (UTC) on June 17 and June 18, Mozilla is the proud holder of the Guinness World Record for "largest number of software downloads in 24 hours." Though the official certificate won't hang in Mozilla Headquarters until next week, after a presentation ceremony in London, the Mozilla team wasted no time in providing virtual certificates for the millions of downloaders who made the record attempt a success. Said Guinness's Gareth Deaves : "An extremely impressive accomplishment" — high praise indeed from a group for whom outstanding feats are a way of life.
