A Cohesive OpenOffice

Senior developers for OpenOffice are saying that a fork of the software isn't in the works, though bitter battles between the Sun and Novell elements of the development team continue.

Worries over a possible split began when key Novell developers included Sun-rejected features in another OO-like project, Go-OO. Michael Meeks, a developer on the Novell side of the fracas, says that there are no current plans for a fork of the popular office suite.

He went on to say, though, that Sun exercises too much control over OpenOffice, and should form an independent foundation like Mozilla and Apache. His comments hinted at the possibility of a future fork if Sun remains in control. Sun, for their part, has characterized the dispute as baseless criticism from an embittered rival.
