Has anyone received their September issue?

According to this article by Carlie Fairchild, "For our current print subscribers: if we have your current e-mail address on file, there is nothing more for you to do. The September issue of Linux Journal will arrive in your inbox today, August 19." Well, it's the 22nd today and I have yet to receive mine. What's up with that?

"Subsequent issues will arrive the first of every month (so the October issue will be sent to you October 1, November's issue on November 1 and so forth)." And if they don't? I have too many things to remember as it is; if it's up to me to remember to seek out LJ each month...I won't. I'm already REALLY unhappy about the print version being discontinued--especially in light of the terrible way LJ handled its announcement--and I don't look forward to the new digital-only options. But if it's not even going to come TO ME each month I'll end up forgetting all about it.

but then again, getting an email these days is nothing like getting the magazine in the mail. Frankly, I haven't even looked for it in my inbox; with all the other email,, its lost. I feel like contacting some advertisers and tell them how unhappy I am with the digital version. But I don't think it will matter; the advertisers will drop off; very disappointed.

Why is the file encrypted?

I must be a complete dweeb or did I miss something in the e-mail announcing the electronic format? I get the file downloaded and when I do try to open the file I am asked for a "Password" as the file has been encrypted. Does anyone know what the password would be so that I can get to my September issue????

I have never been so frustrated.....(and this is supposed to make my life easier??????)

Could you tell me which link you are referring to? I am not aware of any encrypted files.

If you received the "Linux Journal Goes 100% Digital" e-mail message -- I received the message on Aug 19th -- there is a "PDF edition" link about halfway down the message. That link starts a download of the PDF version of the Sept 2011 issue.

Perhaps it was easy to overlook the purpose of that link.

So while they may not have emailed the issue to us, they did give us a link to download it.

Not the PDF

The /201109#pg1 link does not lead to the PDF. Instead, it leads to an "enhanced, online" version of the (free) September issue.

Not the same, at all. And only for the "free" issue.

This is the full September issue. You can download the PDF version of it via a link in the upper right corner of the page that opens.

If you are a subscriber and haven't received an email, we may not have your email address on file. In that case, please fill out this form: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/subscriber-information-update

Make a note there that you have not received an email with the digital issue.

LJ definitely has my e-mail address--it's the same one LJ sent the "we're going 100% digital!" e-mail to--but I have not received the September issue via e-mail.

And, as I and others have noted, sending a link to a file is not the same as sending the file itself, and LJ is saying they're going to send the file to its subscribers...so why isn't that happening?

In the e-mail announcing our switch to a 100% digital magazine we included links to download the PDF, and to view the enhanced edition online. The PDF is ~18MB, thus we did not include it as an attachment, and instead ask that subscribers download it at their convenience.

as a file emailed directly to the subscriber.

The link requires that the subscriber perform some additional action in order to receive his/her magazine, while a PDF email does not.

Why tell subscribers that they will receive the magazine PDF in an email when it's patently not the case?

there is no link to the september issue in your post. I did not receive the issue by email, but LJ DOES have a correct email address for me. I just checked.

The "Linux Journal goes 100% Digital" email I received stated "As our current subscriber, we will send you the PDF edition every month.", and followed that with an HTML link to a download page. It appears that, while LJ says that they email the PDF, they only mean that they'll email a link, and you'll have to take action to retrieve your magazine.

FWIW, I received an email back from subs@ that told me that they had nothing to do with cancellations/refunds, and I would have to email gm@linuxjournal.com instead. I have done so, but not yet received either a refund or even a confirmation.

I suspect that the LJ office has received more cancellations than they expected, and are having some difficulty responding to them. I hope that the cancellations don't push LJ over the edge, to the point where they can't afford to pay out the refunds.

That e-mail says:

" * Timely delivery: each issue will arrive in your e-mail inbox automatically on the first day of every month.
...
As our current subscriber, we will send you the PDF edition every month."

So I expect them to send me the file like they said they're going to. And, as noted in my OP, the 19th came and went but my inbox never received the September issue as promised.

I never received the September issue! Perhaps now, in addition to not find it in the snail mailbox :-(, it will pick it up somewhere or wait another few days.

I think they are all absent or otherwise engaged , indeed strange that someone claims to have had a response to a request for refund.

No, I never received the September issue either. Nor have I received any kind of reply in regards to my request for a refund.
