I've reviewed plenty of simple text editors designed for writers. For my writing, I really desire only a few features:

  • Support for plain text.

  • Spell Czech.

  • Running word count.

Oddly enough, the last item is the most difficult to find. In fact, most text editors don't have a running word count, even though that's the metric most writing is measured by. In fact, the editor I'm using right now, from http://is.gd/writebox, didn't have that simple feature when I first started using it. I e-mailed the developer, and within hours, the feature was added to the application!

If you followed the link, you'll notice Writebox is a Chrome application that runs completely inside your browser. Because it's a Web application, when the running word-count feature was added, it instantly was available to all users. If a text-only editor with Dropbox syncing, off-line support and a running word count sounds like the text editor of your dreams, check out Writebox.

I always wanted something similar but didn't knew the exact name for the application. Now, after reading this excellent article, and checking the homepage of the WriteBox, I will do some more reading and will begin using that offline text editor! It will definitely help me in my business tremendously. thanks again!

I was just wondering if there is something close that's a stand alone application (For example, Nitro for task management started as a chrome app, but now installs on the desktop for linux systems, and that's what i usebest new android phonesSamsung Galaxy Note 3.

There is also a Writer plugin. Worth to check if it costs you the same amount of privacy.

I just wanted to point out that I enjoyed the "error" in the requirements about "Spell Czech" instead of "Spell Check"

And that is one of the problems with spell checkers. They wouldn't report an incorrect usage of the word, only the problem with the word itself.
