VMware ,crossXoffice, Wine

slakware's picture

I'm using applications for windows under Linux with VMware workstation edition, with Wine too, but as often as not with other infamous package - "crossXoffice". I find this package accidentally like torrent. It's very handy like other tools and simply organize.

Love Linux!

Windows Developer on Linux...

John Suykerbuyk's picture

As a full time windows developer, I am a bit of hypocrite in that I only run Linux myself. I've used VMware and VirtualBox on and off over the past couple of years, in the end having to stick to VMWare as the USB support with VIrtualBox was too flaky for far too long with Suse and 2.6 kernels.

Have to say, that I have never had so stable of a windows development machine as I do now. That is not till I built my windows development system in a VM running under Linux.

Well, none unless you count ies4linux, which I last ran a year or so ago when putting together a web page for a friend.

qemu

qemu here, too. Used to run vmware, but alien binaries + Debian unstable kept breaking. Qemu definitely looks slower than vmware, but that could also have to do with the fact that I just bunged my vm-image in there. Might go faster with a "native image", haven't tested yet. I use it almost solely for checking websites in various explorers and win-versions of browsers tho.

Wine + virtualbox

Jamie Bullock's picture

I hardly ever run windows apps, but if I want to try something, I'll shoot for virtualbox first. I might also try wine.

Wine works for me.

Danny Luker's picture

I have use for only one program that is Windows only. My Bible study program is SwordSearcher ( http://www.swordsearcher.com/ ). It runs very well under Wine. With that single exception, I find everything else I need in GNU/Linux compatible software.

Win Apps on Linux Desktop

NPMurphy's picture

I rdesktop to my laptop or VNC to another computer running Debian/Xen, where I have Debian, Ubuntu, Vista and/or XP running in virtual systems.

wine and virtualbox

Anonymous's picture

I use wine for games, although rarely and mostly because I was curious to try the games I bought over the years.

I use virtualbox for one educational software that won't run in wine well, which I must run regularly.

Other than those, I don't use any windows programs. Everything I need for home computing is in the Linux distribution.

Blackberry and gotomypc

Stu's picture

I have a VIrtualBox VM setup and at this point I only power it up for syncing my blackberry once in a while(over bluetooth, which isn't actually working atm), and for using gotomypc to connect to work. I'm always tossing around the idea of bailing on gtkpod to go back to iTunes too.

I use wine but its rare and I really avoid using applications for windows.
There are almost always something that can replace the windows application.

Ashwin's picture

I use Wine for most of the applications, but for apps that just flat out fail in Wine I have a VirtualBox VM of XP ready to go..

andLinux

gary katsevman's picture

Actually, I am doing the opposite. I am running linux apps on windows using andLinux (andlinux.org) i mainly use it for the terminal, but I can run essentially any linux app i want that works on ubuntu, either xfce or kde distros of ubuntu.

subject? subject??? the subject is the question that was asked.

kae verens's picture

wow, that comment link was well hidden!

I agree with jborgmann. I use wine when I'm not too concerned about "authenticity" and qemu when I need a valid IE6 or IE7 session.

grr... I need to fill a captcha to get a preview, and then a captcha yet again to publish. annoying.

Only one choice?

jborgmann's picture

You really need to ditch the radio buttons for checkboxes or reword the question. I use 4 of the choices (depending on the application I want to run) and I am sure there are others who do as well but I/we can only select one?

What do you use to run Windows applications...

Owen (TLB)'s picture

I use a variation of these depending on the application. I don't think that anybody uses exclusively one of the items above, except maybe the exception of VirtaulBox/VMWare
