Help Us Make LinuxJournal.com Better Suited for YOU
Each year we survey visitors and ask them a little about themselves as well as what they'd like to see more (or less) of on LinuxJournal.com. We take this data and ultimately build our upcoming call for articles.
We read every single response that comes in, so please do know that the time you spend here today will be sincerely appreciated. The survey itself should take less than 5 minutes to fill out.
We'll run this survey through late next week and will then randomly select 20 respondents to give free t-shirts to.
This survey is now closed. The winners of the 20 t-shirts will be announced in a comment here below on August 11, 2010.
Thank you to everyone who participated!

If you already use virtualized infrastructure, you are well on your way to leveraging the power of the cloud. Virtualization offers the promise of limitless resources, but how do you manage that scalability when your DevOps team doesn’t scale? In today’s hypercompetitive markets, fast results can make a difference between leading the pack vs. obsolescence. Organizations need more benefits from cloud computing than just raw resources. They need agility, flexibility, convenience, ROI, and control.
Stackato private Platform-as-a-Service technology from ActiveState extends your private cloud infrastructure by creating a private PaaS to provide on-demand availability, flexibility, control, and ultimately, faster time-to-market for your enterprise.

How to Build an Optimal Hadoop Cluster to Store and Maintain Unlimited Amounts of Data Using Microservers
Realizing the promise of Apache® Hadoop® requires the effective deployment of compute, memory, storage and networking to achieve optimal results. With its flexibility and multitude of options, it is easy to over or under provision the server infrastructure, resulting in poor performance and high TCO. Join us for an in depth, technical discussion with industry experts from leading Hadoop and server companies who will provide insights into the key considerations for designing and deploying an optimal Hadoop cluster.
Some of key questions to be discussed are:
- What is the “typical” Hadoop cluster and what should be installed on the different machine types?
- Why should you consider the typical workload patterns when making your hardware decisions?
- Are all microservers created equal for Hadoop deployments?
- How do I plan for expansion if I require more compute, memory, storage or networking?

Ubuntu centric
I think you will find that probably 60 to 75% of all users use Debian or a derivative of it. "nuff said.
75% of all users user some
75% of all users user some form of Debian? I find that really hard to believe. Do you have data to support that or are you just an Ubuntu fan boy trolling me?

Ubuntu centric
Don't use Ubuntu myself. I use Debian Lenny and Mint 9.0. I read statistics somewhere, don't remember where. The one thing I can think of that would be a problem is writing an article and having to list the commands for every type of distro would really be a chore. You kno if an article says apt-get install name of program you should be able to replace apt-get with whatever you use. I have used Suse and Fedora but found that Debians' package management too be far superior to any others. That is why I made the switch. Even when I was using Fedora I knew what to do to get what the article was talking about working. Look at Distrowatch. All of their top distros are Debian based.
I see at least 4 in the top
I see at least 4 in the top 10 that are RPM based. Yup, that's all that are Debian based right there.
The point is, it says apt-get install. It doesn't say "fire up your distros package manager".
Why would you have to list them all? You can write an article with universal instructions for all distros. You don't have to plug Ubuntu in every possible article. That's why it's called Linux Journal. To be gender neutral, not to be Ubuntu Journal.

Ubuntu centric
4 out of the top 10...that is about 40% I would say.
Ubuntu Ubuntu Ubuntu it's all
Ubuntu Ubuntu Ubuntu it's all about Ubuntu !!! are you all on the payroll for them or what ? Yes, it's come a long way...but,so has others.
Nope
We are not on anyone's payroll, I can assure you. Much of our audience does indeed use Ubuntu so you may see more Ubuntu-centric content than any other particular distro, but we are very conscience of making sure to bring in many other distros in to our editorial also.
In an effort to bring more attention to so many of the other great distros we feature a Distro Spotlight on the site too:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/distro-spotlight.
And as a P.S. we're not an Ubuntu-centric shop internally either. We do have Ubuntu and Kubuntu running on a couple of desktops, but we also have CentOS, Debian, and SuSE all running within an arm's length of me. There are many other distros running amongst the LJ team too. We're anything but Ubuntu-centric here at LJ, but I do appreciate your feelings and will take your opinion to our editorial team.

You can say that all you want
but I let my subscription go because every article started with "do apt-get install".
And then the rest of the article was nothing but Ubuntu. I even survived the Maddog Hall and Nick Petreley era. I'd like to see a real poll of "Much of your audience" that uses Ubuntu. I suspect it's less than you want to believe. There's a magazine out there already for Ubuntu users called Ubuntu User. Let them take care of the Ubuntu marketing.

also
OpenSUSE 11.3 was just released. Not one mention of that. I remember reading a nice review of OS 11.0 when it first game out. Is that part of your "effort to bring more attention to so many of the other great distros"? That last thing mentioned about OpenSUSE? That 11.0 had a stay of execution. That's a token mention.
9 articles under Ubuntu tag
2 under OpenSUSE
1 under Fedore
0 under Redhat
1 under Slackware
1 under regular Suse tag
Yeah, not an Ubuntu magazine at all.

Less Ubuntu
Less Ubuntu centric articles, and I'd reconsider getting a subscription again.

I'm considering getting a
I'm considering getting a subscription because Ubuntu and Debian are covered well. I didn't come to this distribution lightly and from my observations, Ubuntu (and Debian) and leading a wave.

Please change the color of the links on this site, it's almost imposible to know there are links sometimes.
Maybe a text-decoration underline or a subtle background color.
Also, please change the fonts to sans-serif or something, this one hurts my eyes.
Thank your for your feedback.

Saw the higher digital price on YOUR sign-up page
https://www.pubservice.com/Subnew2page.aspx?PC=LJ
"Please upgrade my order to include the digital edition of Linux Journal for the term requested above for an additional $10 USD."
I see now that would probably mean as an add-on to the print subscription. I guess I missed the option near the top: "For digital subscriptions click here." - not very obvious in that fainter grey font that seems to be the fad now on so many web sites (a technique I have used on my internal web pages to obscure/de-emphasize text that I did not want viewers to focus on - what's with this new UN-usability trend???)
What about the CD with archives of past issues? That is what really makes a subscription worthwhile to serve as an all-in-one reference source. Has that been dropped?
TIA,
RO
No indication of having successfully filled the form?????
Shouldn't there be a response page that says that the survey has been filled successfully and Thank you and stuff?
Yes
I just tested it again and this is what the page should return upon completion:
"Thank you for taking our survey! If you have any questions or requests, please do not hesitate to contact us, publisher@linuxjournal.com. We're always happy to hear from you.
We'll be selecting 20 random people to receive free t-shirts late next week. Come back to this survey page and check the comments for winners. We'll also e-mail winners directly."
It worked for me just now, but doesn't mean that there wasn't a glitch overnight (perhaps SurveyGizmo was down for a few... I'm not 100% sure). Anyhow, my apologies to you for any effort that was lost on this. It does indeed work now, though I can assure you.
Thanks again!

Yello highlight for question
After I click submit, it loads the same page with all questions highlighted in yellow.
I clicked the back button on browser and then it said thank you..... and "please confirm" button was displayed.
Seems like the incomplete survey submit has a problem.
I'll try again. Though I dont think you'll send the shirt to India if I happen to one in lucky 20 :)
Huh?
I have been through this survey/comment combo twice! I give up!
Digital Edition Not Very Appealing Option
I was considering getting a digital subscription until I found out it actually costs MORE than print, and with print layout instead of PC monitor-oriented layout - what's with that?
Digital price not more than print
Not sure where you saw that. Digital and print are the same price. Let me know if I can personally assist you, publisher [at] linuxjournal [dot] com.
