I, for one, did look at such things before selecting the person who would get my vote. I would tend to agree that those going for open source software are probably doing so out of reasons of security, stability, economy, etc. But the glaringly obvious link between the Republicans/George Bush and Microsoft is too hard to overlook. George Bush and Company has had its tongue so far up the anus of Microsoft (and other corporations, for that matter) that it's tickling Gate's sternum!

Shiny New Server and Open Source Technology

The blog was moved over to a shiny new server today because the old server it was on was crashing every time it experienced heavy load - usually during and after a major debate or speech.

The Director of IT made me post this because he's so proud of how massive and powerful this new server is. Hopefully it will do us well until we replace this blog with the upcoming community network tools we're still developing (don't worry, all the same functionality you have now will still exist).

This particular server is a dual-processor 2.4 Ghz Xeon with 2 GB of RAM. It's running Debian Linux and its web server is Apache. A conversation I had yesterday with Doc Searls at LinuxJournal led to this bit of research outlining which technologies the various presidential campaigns are using.

I usually vote Green but maybe I'll have to reconsider.....as long as he also promises to take away that silly color coded security craziness.

I do not like either party. Does not matter for who, but the only way to become president is with truckloads of $$ and influential friends in industry, with IIS or Apache. There should be more real choice (not only splinters like libertarians).

Some history for whatever it's worth; after a brief time on a 1-lung IIS box on NT, the 2000 Gore campaign ran on ONE late model VA Linux 501-series 2U (from before Super Tuesday through the Lieberman as VP nominee announcement) and later a pair of dual-processors VA Linux 2U boxes through the election. Server was a tweaked Apache with php scripting and a MySQL backend, and the site was "akamized" to increase capacity and access.

I understand Bush 2000 ran IIS on a cluster of Dell boxes but do not know 1st-hand.

Ironically, Exodus Communications (remember them) hosted both sites - Gore's in Sterling, Virginia and Bush's in Dallas. (traffic on their backbone during the debates and Election Day must've been something to see.)

I'm happy to see the campaigns seem to "get" using the Internet this time. In 2000, some members of the Gore campaign did, but the people who ran the campaign and controlled where and how money was spent did not, IMHO.

www.whitehouse.gov is running linux, while whitehouse.gov is running solaris (interesting that they are different).

www.rushlimbaugh.com is runnin Linux and some webserver called communique (it looks like he has a cluster with a few also running apache.)

www.foxnews.com and foxnews.com are running Linux and Solaris together using Netscape-Enterprise (Interesting being that Netscape is owned by [AOL]Time Warner which owns CNN which is also using Linux/Solaris/Netscape-Enterprise).

Bill O'reilly (billoreillly.com) is using Weblogic Server but it's OS is "unknown".

And Sean Hannity's site (hannity.com) is running FreeBSD with tigershark as the Web server.

and of course LinuxJournal.com is running Linux and apache.

A couple of addenda, since this thing went up.

First, somebody on the Republican side of this thing contacted me. He said, "I do quite a bit of work for RNC/GWB and pretty much everything except the web servers are FreeBSD / Linux. Needless to say we are open source supporters and contributors."

Second, I also heard that the Democratic National Committee runs entirely on Penguin Computing Systems
