Penguins for President?
As we swing into the thick of the 2004 electoral playoffs, it's interesting to see what kinds of platforms are running under the candidates' official campaign Web sites. Netcraft has a handy feature called "What's that site running?" that lets us see combinations of Web servers and OS platforms. So here's a quick rundown, in alphabetical order:
George W. Bush: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000
Wesley Clark: Apache on Linux
Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD
John Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"
Richard Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000
John Kerry: Apache on Linux
Dennis Kucinich Apache on Linux
Carol Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD
Al Sharpton: Apache on Solaris 8
Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD
For what it's worth, the Republican National Committee is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000, while the Democratic National Committee is running Apache on Linux.
As of this writing, November 5, 2003, the RNC has an uptime of 4.26 days (maximum of 39.04) and a 90-day moving average of 16.91. The DNC has an uptime of 445.02 days (also the maximum) and a 90-day moving average of 395.38 days.
Draw your own conclusions.

Every security policy provides guidance and requirements for ensuring adequate protection of information and data, as well as high-level technical and administrative security requirements for a system in a given environment. Traditionally, providing security for a system focuses on the confidentiality of the information on it. However, protecting the data integrity and system and data availability is just as important. For example, when processing United States intelligence information, there are three attributes that require protection: confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

How to Build an Optimal Hadoop Cluster to Store and Maintain Unlimited Amounts of Data Using Microservers
Realizing the promise of Apache® Hadoop® requires the effective deployment of compute, memory, storage and networking to achieve optimal results. With its flexibility and multitude of options, it is easy to over or under provision the server infrastructure, resulting in poor performance and high TCO. Join us for an in depth, technical discussion with industry experts from leading Hadoop and server companies who will provide insights into the key considerations for designing and deploying an optimal Hadoop cluster.
Some of key questions to be discussed are:
- What is the “typical” Hadoop cluster and what should be installed on the different machine types?
- Why should you consider the typical workload patterns when making your hardware decisions?
- Are all microservers created equal for Hadoop deployments?
- How do I plan for expansion if I require more compute, memory, storage or networking?

So now its verified. Dean is the *****.. he uses FreeBSD.. he owns the candidates.. too bad reality isnt like choice of server operating software. -vax
How about a web site that IS the President (or wants to be...)?

Re: Penguins for President?
Uhh Guys............
Give it a rest. Did no one posting notice the title clearly stated:
THE LIGHTER SIDE: Penguins for President?
IT was not meant seriously. The only interesting bit was the uptime statistic. I think I and every thinking individual understands that Doc was not suggesting you vote based on the web software used.
It seems to me that if we lose our sense of humor then common discourse will decend to the levels it has in most of the remarks made to this article.
Why get so emotional over something so trivial?? I'm sure among the dross found here there are a few kernals of interesting comments, but it was hard to find any reasonable, rational statements through the whole thread.
In arguing / debating an opinon or view if you throw tantrums (as most of the posts are) most people don't remember what you said, only that you threw a tantrum.
If you really want to push a cause, tone down the emotion and do something constructive. Help your canidate out in your area. Much better than worrying and flaming Lixux Journal because they screwed up alphabetising a list of names.
So what if the Linux Journal leans to the left. There are plenty of sites out there that promote the other view. Don't trash it because they hold a point of view different from your own. Debate it;think, then convince. I love a good debate on the issues, but flaming is childish.
Re: Penguins for President?
Well said. Bingo.
President and Microsoft
Curious data. You can be sure that the President's staff did not pick MS because they are cozy with MS. Bill Gates is a well known Democrat. His dad is a famous lawyer and the majority of lawyers are Democrats. Gates is also a Catholic and the majority of Catholics are Democrats. What part of this picture suggests that the President is going to be cozy with a company and family that has so many reasons for being anti-Republican?
It amazes me that people who can develop and support GREAT software like Linux and Apache can be so incapable of being logical. But then when it comes to politics, facts and logic rarely prevail.
As for business, how many of you want a President to be anti-business? Do any of you own or run a business? Are any of you employed by a business? Where do you think this country would be if Democrats were allowed to run opposed with their anti-business attitudes and proposals?
Re: President and Microsoft
Uhm. Gates is certainly *not* a Catholic. His wife is. He is a UU.
Re: Penguins for President?
Rather a stupid discussion,
For what it is worth the AZ Republican party is running on Linux and Apache
teh AZ Democate party is running Windows 2000 server and IIs.
Lets see the Socialist party in Austria is running Windows 2000 and IIs
the same for the Christian Democrats in Austria
Here is one to get everyone mad, the Peoples freedom party (aka Haider the Nazi lover) web site runs on Linux w/ Apache.
What does it mean....... Nothing
Re: Penguins for President?
Never mind the presidential candidates, what's Arni "I'll be back!" Schwarzenegger running on?
Skynet perhaps?
Re: Penguins for President?
While I don't think there is anything wrong with running a web server on Linux, especially if you can keep the costs down, it seems pretty clear that DNC doesn't patch very often. How you draw the conclusion that this is a good thing is beyond me. The more people there are out there running Linux that don't patch their systems, the more it will become a target. Even if Linux isn't the target that Microsoft is right now, it doesn't seem like this is something to be proud of.
Conclusion:
RNC appears to keep up on their patches?
Most likely DNC isn't keeping up on the patches, or perhaps down time is measured differently here? (Web service being shutdown not down time maybe?)
Re: Penguins for President?
If you don't support Lieberman, you are an anti-semite and a Nazi and you want all the jews to F*U*C*K*I*N*G die!
Re: Penguins for President?
For Howard Dean's campaign, at least, the use of open-source software stems from more than expediency. His campaign manager, Joe Trippi, worked at a startup for awhile in the 90s where he got Open Source religion. He's been quoted saying that he's trying to model the campaign machine after open source projects and Linux in particular.
Re: Penguins for President?
I, for one, did look at such things before selecting the person who would get my vote. I would tend to agree that those going for open source software are probably doing so out of reasons of security, stability, economy, etc. But the glaringly obvious link between the Republicans/George Bush and Microsoft is too hard to overlook. George Bush and Company has had its tongue so far up the anus of Microsoft (and other corporations, for that matter) that it's tickling Gate's sternum!
Re: Penguins for President?
This is halarious, you people think the candidate has anything to do with this??? All this shows is what the consultant they paid to set up their web site used. THAT'S ALL. I seriously doubt that these candidates have any idea what web server they are running on. Shoot, I'd be impressed if they've even looked at their web site before.
Re: Penguins for President?
But Bush is EVILLL and we have to find something to criticize in everything he does. Look for a post on the website next week to focus on the fact that Bush's suits are made in sweatshops and that his ties are non-union.
Re: Penguins for President?
Ye, It's to bad all the Lunatics are running Linuxs, it gives the OS a Bad Reputation!
Interesting tidbit...
From the Blog at General Clark's campaign site:
Re: Penguins for President?
All this proves is that the people running the Linux Journal are hard lefties. The fact that Lieberman gets dead last in an Alphabetical list shows that. I don't give a ***** what os someone's webhosting provider uses. It has no baring whatsoever on what kind of leader that person will be.
Stalin and Mao with a good PR Firm
I'm sure this whole thing is a hoax. Just a way to suck the open source crowd in to voting for Stalin and Mao.

Looks like Tux' choice of Wes Clark is a winner !!
See:

Re: Black-white (random order) = Democrats-Republicans
I do not like either party. Does not matter for who, but the only way to become president is with truckloads of $$ and influential friends in industry, with IIS or Apache. There should be more real choice (not only splinters like libertarians).
Re: Penguins for President?
Draw my own conculsions?
Joe Lieberman comes after Mosley-Braun and Sharpton?
Bug in strcmp.
DNC uptime = 445.0 90D MA= 395.38?
So 90 days ago, the uptime would have been 365.02 and increased by 1 each day. Wouldn't this make the 90 day MA 400.2?
Not sure what to conclude. Reality is different for Dems?
Re: Penguins for President?
Joe comes last because the commies that run linuxjournal don't think he's ***** liberal enough for them. And he's a Jew to boot, and anti-semitism is unfortunately making a comeback among euroweenies and their sympathizers in America.
Re: Penguins for President?
Before anyone jumps on my typo.
445.02 - 90 = 355.02 not 365.02 The average would be 400.02 not 400.2
Re: Penguins for President?
Some history for whatever it's worth; after a brief time on a 1-lung IIS box on NT, the 2000 Gore campaign ran on ONE late model VA Linux 501-series 2U (from before Super Tuesday through the Lieberman as VP nominee announcement) and later a pair of dual-processors VA Linux 2U boxes through the election. Server was a tweaked Apache with php scripting and a MySQL backend, and the site was "akamized" to increase capacity and access.
I understand Bush 2000 ran IIS on a cluster of Dell boxes but do not know 1st-hand.
Ironically, Exodus Communications (remember them) hosted both sites - Gore's in Sterling, Virginia and Bush's in Dallas. (traffic on their backbone during the debates and Election Day must've been something to see.)
I'm happy to see the campaigns seem to "get" using the Internet this time. In 2000, some members of the Gore campaign did, but the people who ran the campaign and controlled where and how money was spent did not, IMHO.
Re: Penguins for President?
Yes Bush ran IIS on Win2k - I helped set them up at Exodus in Austin.
Re: Penguins for President?
I've concluded you're a liberal democrat.
www.georgewbushstore.com
runs apache on Tru64. Not linux but still a unix, if that is what this post is complaining about.
Re: Penguins for President? www.whitehouse.gov www.rushlimbaugh.
www.whitehouse.gov is running linux, while whitehouse.gov is running solaris (interesting that they are different).
www.rushlimbaugh.com is runnin Linux and some webserver called communique (it looks like he has a cluster with a few also running apache.)
www.foxnews.com and foxnews.com are running Linux and Solaris together using Netscape-Enterprise (Interesting being that Netscape is owned by [AOL]Time Warner which owns CNN which is also using Linux/Solaris/Netscape-Enterprise).
Bill O'reilly (billoreillly.com) is using Weblogic Server but it's OS is "unknown".
And Sean Hannity's site (hannity.com) is running FreeBSD with tigershark as the Web server.
and of course LinuxJournal.com is running Linux and apache.
Re: Penguins for President? www.whitehouse.gov www.rushlimbaugh.

Re: Penguins for President?
A couple of addenda, since this thing went up.
First, somebody on the Republican side of this thing contacted me. He said, "I do quite a bit of work for RNC/GWB and pretty much everything except the web servers are FreeBSD / Linux. Needless to say we are open source supporters and contributors."
Second, I also heard that the Democratic National Committee runs entirely on Penguin Computing Systems
Lieberman
Off the subject a bit, but Lieberman looks a lot like Senator Palpatine.
Re: Lieberman
What's your point? Senator/Chancellor Palpatine is the most honest and upright member of the Galactic Senate.
Re: Lieberman
